The Outer Banks of North Carolina... just saying those words puts me at ease. Those who have spent time on this barrier island, known as OBX, understand exactly what I mean. Gorgeous beaches, a landscape dotted with charming beach cottages, a slower pace of life, and amazing food.
I was lucky enough to spend many summers there as a teenager with my siblings, cousins, and friends. This is also the place where I celebrated my high school graduation. And, for the last 20 years, my college buddies and I have made it an annual tradition to converge on OBX to reconnect and enjoy all that we love about this special place.
For us, no trip to OBX is complete without at least one stop at a little beach bar called Tortugas' Lie. A small, causal spot with a welcoming bar, amazing food, and a cold beer. This spot is no secret however, thus the wait for lunch can easily be 2 hours during peak summer. So, plan your visit accordingly.
As far as the food goes... Some of my favorite dishes include the steamed spiced shrimp (with Old Bay seasoning), Baja Fish Tacos, Island Fries, and the tuna steak sandwich special of the day. Seasoning and toppings of the sandwich varies daily.
If you have to wait, no worries, grab a beer and wait for a seat to open up at the bar. Or head out back for a game of cornhole or sand volleyball with your friends as you wait for your table.
