Airbnb has truly changed the world and how many of us travel it. I personally prefer renting an apartment on Airbnb when traveling versus staying in a hotel as it makes me feel as if I'm home away from home. I feel that I'm closer to the real, everyday aspect of life in a city. That is a core part of the local experience for me.
Another advantage of renting someone's home is that they typically tell you their favorite spots in their city and their go-to local haunts. The neighborhood gems that they fell in love with because the staff is super friendly or maybe because it has a unique vibe. Or maybe it was simply the best food close to home. Such hidden gems, per their name, are typically hard to find unless you've done your research. It is not to say that I haven't received some very good recommendations from hotel concierges, but there is something more intimate about the advice I get from my Airbnb hosts.
I share all of this as this is exactly what happened to me when I visited Vienna in January. My hosts told me their favorite neighborhood spot which was located just around the corner from my temporary front door. A place called Zweitbester in Vienna's forth district.
Of course, it was the first place I tried and it was easy to see why they loved it so. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. The food was freshly made and delicious. And the local craft beer my waitress recommended was perfect. The decor of Zweitbester is industrial and modern with high vaulted ceilings and exposed ventilation ducks and ample windows to let in the sun light. A smart and sophisticated environment with a focus on modern and innovative dishes.
The team at Zweitbester also hosts local music events, details of which can be found on their website or their FB page. They also display art which I assume is rotated monthly or so.
I ended up stopping by for another of those craft beers after a night photography tour of Vienna. I was surprised to find that it was one of the more popular spots in the 4th district. The boisterous local crowd enjoying a night out in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Who can blame them?
